In the assembly hall, the Dehler team brings together all the elements that will make a living, breathing sailboat, and every detail is addressed in such a way that will improve reliability and make routine maintenance simple.

Winches, clutches, tracks, cleats and other hardware that must be rebedded periodically are bolted to aluminum backing plates laminated integrally in the deck. The backing plates are drilled and tapped to accept the mounting bolts. The benefits are twofold: the act of tapping the plate largely eliminates the hole's tendency to leak, and routine rebedding or replacement of any hardware can be accomplished by one person on deck.

The electrical system has been designed around flexibility and ease of expansion. At left is the typical nerve center of a Dehler's 12 volt electrical system. The electrical panel, incorporating breaker switches for lighting and equipment, as well as mutifunction instruments for battery voltage and fuel/water/holding tank levels, has been designed for simple maintenance and replacement if need be. The three large modular connectors are simply disconnected, and a new panel plugged in.

Wiring for the individual circuits, seen above the plugs) is fully color-coded and enters easily accessed conduits running throughout the boat. The conduits are sized to accept additional wiring (a coiled messenger line installed in one is seen in the upper right). Also apparent is a hefty terminal bar dedicated to the blue-colored DC ground wiring.

At left is a Dehler 39's fuel tank, showing the typical installation (heavy weights such as tanks and batteries are concentrated as close to the boat's center as possible). Since this fuel tank was carried through the companionway, it may also be removed without demolition.

The inset at upper right shows the filler hose, braided stainless vent line, ground wire and CE certification. At lower right, the fuel pickup and return lines, and primary fuel filter with easily-inspected water separator. The braided fuel lines receive additional protection via clear plastic tubing, wherever they pass through bulkheads and partitions.

Every Dehler has several key groupings of flush-fitting thru-hulls, each fitted with ball valves, readily accessed for simple inspection without removing multiple panels (far left). Near left, a view beneath the sink of a Dehler 39, showing clearly marked control valves for the water system, allowing for tank selection and isolation of the water heater.
The Naked Dehler 39

The above photos were taken during a Dehler North America Open House, a real-world demonstration of the tremendous access to all key systems and components. The gallery at right features a closer look at the innards of a typical Dehler.
